I have a customer who bought a HP P1005 printer. I tried a couple of different toner cartridge combinations but due to their use they had to use OEM cartridges. He’s buying a cartridge a month. At 5% coverage that’s 24000 pages a year and $936 a year. When they asked for alternatives I came up with this option:
Buy a used HP 1320 for under $200. With a high yield recharged Quinn’s Rapid Recharger cartridge the annual toner cost will be $300.
First year savings $936-300-200 =$336
Second year savings $636
Our general rule is: The cheaper the machine the higher the cost per page.
When buying a machine, look at if there is a high yield cartridge. Check the cost per page. Depending on your volume a bigger machine may be cheaper in the long run.
Happy Printing

Here’s how I bought a laser printer for $20.
If you bring in empty toner or ink cartridges to Staples they give you $3 credit for each, max 10 cartridges per month. I started with a $30 coupon. The Brother HL-2140 is normally $120. There is a refurb for $80 less a $30 rebate =$50. $50 – $30 coupon =$20.
If you already have a HL-2140 or HL-2170W printer you could still do this. The drum unit sells for $115. You could get an original drum unit for $20. So start collecting your empty toner or ink cartridges.

That Refurbished Brother Laser Printer went from $150 to $200. One of the rebates expired. It’s still a good price and a good cost per page

Staples has a refurbished Brother Color Laser Printer for $150 after rebate.
Cost per page is comparable.

Very often printers copiers faxes and multifunctions come with a starter cartridge or a standard yield cartridge. Before you replace that cartridge check first to see if there is a high yield cartridge that will fit in your machine. If you read my post Don’t buy the HP 2035 you’ll see that the high yield cartridge gives a much greater value. Brother and HP often have standard and high yield cartridges. Be sure to see if the high yield will fit in your machine before buying it. (The high yield cartridge will not fit in the HP 1160 or P2035.)

Don’t buy the HP P2035. Buy the HP P2055. The P2055 will cost about $100 more than the P2055. Why would you buy something more expensive?
The P2035 only takes the standard yield cartridge. Superstore price is $88.99 for 2300 pages. Cost per page is $0.0387.
The P2055 will take the standard yield cartridge or the high yield cartridge. The high yield cartridge costs $162.99 for 6500 pages for a cost per page of $0.0251
Two high yield cartridges cost $326. That is the same yield as 5 standard yield cartridges that would cost $500.
Thus, buying the HP P2055 printer that cost $100 more will save you $175 in toner cost within 2 high yield cartridges
